Rhodes Squish – healthy food for busy little ones

Rhodes Squish is not only one of the most popular children’s pureed food brands in South Africa, but it’s now evolved into a collection of yummy offerings that have saved my ass more times than I can count.

I don’t know about you, but getting my two year old to eat vegetables and any fruit other than strawberries, bananas and apples, has proved trickier than trigonometry. I tried, on our weaning journey, to introduce different food groups to her but she was just not interested and whilst I always vowed that Mr H and I would not fight about food, I couldn’t help but feel a little worried that she wasn’t getting enough goodness in her diet.

After our first trip to the UK with Rosie in 2016, for her to meet her family, I was thrilled with variety of baby food pouches which were available – the flavor profiles were huge and nasties such as added cane sugar, salt and preservatives were kept well away. Rosie enjoyed eating them, and it took so much pressure off of me to make food.

On our return to Cape Town, I went looking for SA offerings and there were two brands available, one that added sugar and other yucky additives and then there was Rhodes Squish – I love the simplicity of them, and how they taught Rosie to self-feed, encouraging her to use her hands.

The Squish pouch in a flash:

  1. There are 14 different combinations featuring 100% fruit and veg purees.
  2. They are free from added sugar, salt, maize starch, colorants and flavorings.
  3. They are incredibly good value.
  4. They make great on-to-go snacks for busy living.

Being able to add a mixed veg squish to Rosie’s lunchbox in the morning gives me peace of mind that she’s getting some secret veggies into her system.

I am heavily reliant on them for when we’re traveling, especially on our yearly flight to the UK because I know that if the in-flight meal doesn’t appeal to her, that I’m going to be able to get some goodness down her and we won’t be having any hunger melt downs.

Cece’s weaning journey

We’ve just started introducing solids to Cece’s diet and she finishes a Squish pouch in one sitting! As well as homemade sweet potato and butternut purees, I’m loving the new yogurt Squish mix, especially the pear, butternut, yogurt, mango and cinnamon combo…which I think is dangerously delicious!

Don’t be jelly!

What child doesn’t like the fun associated with eating jelly? There are now four ready-to-eat jellies in the Squish range and they are free from gelatine, colourants, flavourings and preservatives, only made with real fruit puree.

I’m the worst at lunchboxes but I always have emergency squish in the nappy bag for girls…..if it’s pear and rooibos I’ll sneak a taster as well. Omw have you tasted it? I’d love this prize

This is truly a great competition to win. I can relate to the squish life. @shante_hutton

My little son hates fruit, so I try and get as much nutrients in his body by Squish juice. Yogurt, Jelly and Custard. This would be a great competition to win, my son would be head over heels excited.

My oldest would polish off anything I put in front of him (still does), so gave me a false sense that I knew what I was doing when it came to weaning my daughter – well about that!! She isn’t a fan of most things I make and a lot of it ends up on the floor. But she does love these, which has been amazing! So my go to when we going out. At least i know she will eat something

I really don’t like the weaning process. I’m not one who enjoys cooking in the first place so to still do baby food is the pits for me. Goodies like these that are nutritious, healthy and ready to go are right up my alley!

I’d be absolutely delighted if I were to be given an opportunity to try this amazing brand for my little one. It’s super handy as well and looks super delish! Especially when you’ve got 2 fussy kids (can anyone say, ‘lucky mama’?!) haha I’ll add in our smoothie recipes for bub as he is now teething heavy so the zoku pop maker is a recipe for success, yum! I have a confession to make… sometimes I eat Squish (before I had a baby) so now I don’t need any excuse to indulge and of course I will share lol!
