When it comes to my skin, I’m pedantic about what I use – harsh chemicals are a definite no, which is why I’ve gravitated towards Naturals Beauty.
Where did it start
in University I took a part time job at Lush and learned far too much about natural, environmentally safe products and the many uses that natural ingredients offer – for instance, lavender and rose oil helps relieve redness and grape extract is an astringent that cleans and keeps pores smell – it converted me. With all the pollution and nasties in food, why should I add further insult by slathering my body in petroleum and let animal habitats be destroyed for sodium palm kernelate
Moving to SA in 2010, I was keen to find a line of products that were clean and skin-friendly and through a good friend, I came across Naturals Beauty run by Tanya du Bois. Her mission statement was exactly what I was looking for.
“We’re committed to making products that are free from petrochemicals, parabens, synthetic fragrances and harmful chemicals.
We do not test our products on animals, nor are any of our source products tested on animals. We are a family run company known for our personal customer care and excellent quality! “
Her range is honest, her products fresh and earth friendly as well as skin-kind AND they are made right here in Cape Town. Now, having just had my first child, It’s important for me to keep her skin free from yucky chemicals and I was thrilled to bits when I received this stunning trio of products from the Naturals Beauty baby range. The packaging is adorable and the free-from list puts my worrying mother’s heart at ease.
The trio consists of:
Baby body lotion R79.95
This lovely all-natural formula of avocado oil, shea butter, jojoba oil and aloe is soothing and oh so gentle for babies skin.
Baby bum cream R64.95
Bottoms are very sensitive areas and this ultra mild balm keeps dryness away as well as nappy rash. The real beauty of balms is that you can use them anywhere and this little tub is great for traveling.
Baby gentle milk wash R79.95
Bath time is a soothing time and this creamy, chamomile-rich wash is lovely for delicate newborn skin.
But why should you think about getting these products and ditching the Johnsons and other well-known brands – I mean, mineral oil sounds so enriching….but it’s actually a by-product of petroleum and there is nothing beneficial in mineral oil except that it’s cheap and all the beauty giants love something that saves them money. In fact, mineral oil blocks your pores as it cannot be absorbed fully by your skin and this leads to you getting more blackheads and spots. The same is true of paraffinum liquidum.
And what about Parabens?
Parabens have been used for years to preserve products and keep away bacteria which sounds good but they have been linked with cancer and it doesn’t seem natural for something to last for 3 years +.
What’s wrong with Sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate?
SLS is the ingredient that helps products foam and bubble and it does a marvelous job of drying out your skin which then makes you apply more pore-blocking body creams and the cycle just continues. The idea that cleanliness can only be deduced by the amount of bubbles formed on your skin is cray cray.
I now realize how much of raging freak I look but it’s so easy to be mislead by beauty/cosmetic giants – yes, it’s much cheaper to buy the big brands and I have yet to find a high-factor suncream that’s all-natural but I believe it’s the little changes here and there that are the important ones. I only have one body, so it’s worth giving it a little extra love and attention.
