A week before lockdown, Mr H and I were immersing ourselves in a fantastic food and wine experience at Louisvale, unaware that in just a few days, we would find ourselves house-bound…wine tasting a distant memory.
Well, we definitely chose the best way to end our proverbial freedom and the reason I didn’t share our experience sooner was because I was waiting for the restrictions to lift so we could visit again.
I’m happy to report now that they are are open again with a new menu and 3 new wines – Louisvale Merlot 2018, Louisvale Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, and the Louisvale Sauvignon Blanc 2020.
If you’re wanting to break your restaurant lockdown cherry, this would make an excellent spot!
The venue
Located in the Devon Valley in Stellenbosch, Louisvale’s contemporary structure is a marriage of varying elements and materials that creates an inspiring location to relax in.
The views from the restaurant and tasting room is incredible and the steel, concrete and glass structure sits majestically, but unobtrusively in one of Cape Town’s most beautiful valleys.
The space is carefully broken by comfortable seating, artwork and dining chairs and tables
The Food
We went into lockdown in a delicious food coma with a 3-course lunch created by Executive Chef Kirstie du Toit and her team. The execution of flavors and styling of each dish was spectacular and whilst the menu has altered to focus on seasonal ingredients, the signature passion and deep love of flavor-driven food remains.
The slow cooked pork belly (from R160) is still a staple and you have to order it if you go!
The Wine
Whilst their Chardonnay is well renowned (and was the only wine I was drinking through the first alcohol ban), their MCCs are brilliant.
Louisvale scooped Gold and Silver awards at the recent Amorim Méthode Cap Classique Challenge 2020 – a Gold for their MCC Brut Chardonnay NV in the Blanc de Blanc category, and a Silver for their MCC Brut Rosé NV and a Double Gold at the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards for both these outstanding MCCs.
Thank you, Mouton, Kirstie and Louisvale Wines, for inviting and hosting us, it was a yummy experience!
