Al fresco family fun at Tryn Restaurant at Steenberg

Over the weekend we were invited to Steenberg to try the new Al Fresco Boxes from their signature restaurant Tryn.

In previous years this wouldn’t be such a big deal, but with Covid and social distancing, all interactions outside of the safe space that is home feel almost “naughty”. Perhaps that’s silly to even say, but we put a lot of thought into all the locations we go to and I was sold on this visit because a) Steenberg MCC is my husband’s fave and b) the Al Fresco boxes get served on the lawn away from people. WIN.

We chose a beautiful, slightly blustery day, and with blankets in tow (they don’t provide blankets or cushions) we arrived and I checked in at the front of house straight away. After a bit of a wait, we set up under the speckled shade of one of the oak trees on the lawn and waited for our picnic to begin.

The Al Fresco Lunch Box

Arriving in a box, complete with a bag for the girls and a bottle of bubbly, our Al Fresco lunch was set before us and I couldn’t believe how much food was included.

Executive Chef Kerry Kilpin has created the most delicious dishes with a fresh, summer feel and heaps of flavour.

The Artichoke salad was the clear winner and I will go back to Steenberg just to eat more of that!

It felt like a lot of food…even though Mr H and I devoured most of it. The bread was fantastic and we actually took half of it home for later.

The aftermath…

Al Fresco Kiddies Box

Lunch for the girls included a cheese and parma ham wrap, fruit and a chocolate brownie each – Rosie was very much in her happy place…though I wish it came with the option of a drink for them.

Their bag also a box of sweet treats in it which I think were for the adults but Cece was too freakin’ quick and we lost the chocolates to her

The location

Absolute top marks for it being a kid-friendly, relaxed environment for families. There were multiple lawn games which gave us a good 2 hours before the kids started to look like they needed to roam.

Overall Experience

It was just the afternoon off we needed – time well-spent in a calm and beautiful environment that the kids thoroughly enjoyed. You could have almost shared the adult lunch with 3 people…almost 😉

There were no plates given or a knife to cut the bread which was a bit awkward and we weren’t given a drinks menu or option for water. It felt like we were very much excluded from the restaurant but that had its perks in that we weren’t bothered by anyone.

The Steenberg Al Fresco Boxes for two range in price from R295 for the brunch option, R550 for lunch or R100 per child, and are available on a pre-ordered basis only. In the event of poor weather the boxes will be available for collection for you to enjoy at home. Book or enquire via email info@tryn.co.za or call +27 (0)21 7137178.
